Brighton boy ( Buzz ) came to me in 2010, I first heard of Buzz when my uncle contacted me saying he knows of someone who has a horse that has potential but is currently out at grass.
I went to see him and he was in and had been in a 300 acre field for more than 3 years so you can only imagine what he looked like, although behind his long tatty mane and split hoofs I could see this lovely horse with
plenty of character.
I was told about Buzz’s breeding and he is by Monte Carlo who is an exceptional Warmblood who can turn his hoof to anything and has bred some quality foals in his time, his mum was a French thoroughbred.
The history of Buzz wasn’t that great, he had got into the wrong hands at some point and couldn’t cope with anyone trying to get on him and definitely not a big crowd around him either as he would panic.
He had competed a couple British Eventing tracks in his time but due to the amount of time it took for the rider to get on him, he got put In the field and was left to do as he pleases – im sure he didn’t mind too much!
I got him home and tried many different ways of getting on him and I felt like I was a stunt rider in the circus, needless to say many professionals, family and friends tried to persuade me to give him back to the previous owner or put him to grass.
Over 3yrs on, we have competed in many events including the British Showjumping Festival (Scope) we have also competed for our area (Lincolnshire) twice. I have many prizes and ribbons from the events we have been too and although it wasn’t easy to start with, im loving every minute now and it was worth the time and dedication it took to get this far.
Buzz has still got some trust issues with other people and it is only safe for me to ride him due to the bond we have, he is fantastically behaved at a show in front of hundreds, sometimes thousands of people and is slowly getting used to new people standing around him too.
He is very special and im so lucky to have him, he may have had some issues in the past but without those issues, I would most probably not have him now as he would have been the previous owner still.
The moral to this story is, don’t give up! Each horse is an individual and have their own thoughts, fears and memories – its your job to give them fresh thoughts and memories and erase their fears
